Man Directs Traffic At Accident Scenes, But He's Not A Cop.

He wears a police uniform and, Tuesday, he was directing traffic at a crash scene. But he's no cop. You would think he would be in trouble for impersonating a police officer.

Not just anyone can jump out at an accident scene and start moving cars on a busy highway. But that's exactly what we saw. From a distance, he looks like a beat cop directing traffic.

A closer look shows that something's not quite right. He has no badge, pinned on stripes and a uniform that's a tad too short. He is no officer.

When asked what he was doing, John Green replied, "Directing traffic."

Specifically, he was directing traffic for an accident scene on a very busy Ridgewood Avenue in a uniform that's definitely not standard issue.

When asked where he got the uniform, Green replied, "I made it myself."

And real officers let it happen. They all know Green. He's a local character.

"I was state trooper orientated," Green says.

We're not sure what "state trooper orientated" means or if that qualifies him to play traffic cop.

Officers on scene didn't seem to mind, for a while. They eventually asked him to leave, which he did.

"The fact that he was standing on Ridgewood does distress us," says Capt. Bill Hall, South Daytona Police Department.

You may be surprised, though, to find out that Green really didn't break any laws. Even the stun gun he wore on his hip is okay.

"He's not wearing anything that says police on it," explains Capt. Hall.

Another important distinction between a police impersonator and just a guy in a get up is that, when he was asked if he was a police officer, he said no. Had he said yes, it would have been a crime. So the next time you drive past an accident scene don't be alarmed if it's Mr. Green directing you.
